CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
I canât believe youâre really doing this.â With a deft flick of his wrist Asher tipped another forkload of manure onto the muck sack. âWhy not? Ainât like I never mucked out horse shit before.â
âYou know what I mean,â said Matt, and kicked the stable door he was leaning over.
Gently pushing Cygnet aside, Asher slid his fork under another pile of manure. In the yard behind him the bustle of afternoon stables half drowned their conversation. Why heâd felt the need to come down here and shovel shit he wasnât sure. Mayhap âcause this was the last chance heâd ever have to do it. The last chance here, any road. In this stable. In this yard, where it had all begun. It was, he supposed, another goodbye that needed to be said. He glanced up at Matt, then kept working.
âAye.â
âHave you seen Dathne since ââ
âNo,â said Asher, disposing of the manure. He didnât want to, either. Just the thought of what heâd asked her, how sheâd answered, could flood him hot with angry embarrassment. Seeing her was impossible. The faster she faded into memory, the happier heâd be.
âAre you going to?â
There were three more piles of manure to collect. Bloody Cvgnet; the horse was nowt but a pretty silver shit-maker.
âNo.â
Another bang as Matt kicked at the stable door again. Why not? Youâre leaving tomorrow. Sheâll be hurt if you donât.â
âI doubt it.â âAshedâ Mattâs laughter was baffled. âSheâs your friend.
How can you not ââ
âEasy!â he shouted, glaring. âBecause I donât bloody want to, all right? Because â because ââ He couldnât say it. Couldnât make the words leave his mouth. If he didnât say it,maybe that meant it didnât have to be true.
Mattâs expression changed. âOh.â In his voice, a sudden understanding. âOh, Asher. Why didnât you say something?â
Savagely he scooped up another pile of manure and dumped it with the rest. âBecause I didnât want to. Anyway, it donât matter.â âOf course it matters. When did you â I mean, how long have you known you â¦â
Asher sighed and let himself collapse against the stable wall. Moodily he poked at the straw with the tips of the fork tines, and watched the lazy swish of Cygnetâs tail as the horse nibbled hay. âI donât rightly know. Seems it kind of snuck up on me.â He glanced at Matt, then glanced away, not wanting to see the sympathy in his friendâs face. âI asked her to come with me.â
âOh,â Matt said helplessly. âAsher, Iâm sorry. Damn, I wish youâd said something. I couldâve told you sheâd never agree to leave Dorana.â
Oh, could he? âItâs all right,â Asher said curtly. âShe told me herself.â
âI had no idea you felt that way. No idea at all.â
âWhy would you?â said Asher, pushing away from the wall and forking up the remaining manure. He needed to ;et out of here before Matt said something theyâd both regret. It looked like he was parting badly from one good friend; he didnât want an argument with Matt to make it two.
